September 19-23, 2016 (Monday through Friday)

Dumas Bay Centre, Federal Way, Washington (45 minutes south of Seattle)

Beth McTear (Honest Alchemy) and Kathy Hattori (Botanical Colors) are teaming up to lead a natural dye retreat and Master class at Dumas Bay Centre, a full service conference facility 45 minutes from Seattle and 25 minutes from the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Join us for a relaxed and invigorating exploration with two nationally recognized instructors. Lodging and three daily meals are included in the retreat price: all you have to do is get here.

Dumas Bay Centre is set on 12 acres with beautiful views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains.  The guest rooms are quiet and comfortable with private baths and airy meeting rooms overlooking the great meadow. With no telephones or televisions, the rooms are distraction-free and WIFI is provided throughout the building. Meal service and reception cuisine are prepared on site, using simple quality ingredients, locally sourced, when possible.  Dietary preferences such as vegetarian and gluten-free options are available upon request – please ask when registering.

The class consists of three distinct and complementary areas of study over 4 days: advanced color work with fashion trends and natural dyes,  printing with natural dyes, and fine tuning our indigo skills.  It is our vision that each participant will gain a deeper understanding and confidence for using natural dyes in their textile and design practice.  Each participant will receive a dye journal to customize and use for note taking so that you leave the retreat with a detailed record of the colors and techniques used for future reference.  Evening lab time will be available from 7-9:30 for relaxing and journaling and Beth or Kathy will be present during lab time.

Class Description and Schedule

Plan on arriving on Monday, September 19 after 3 PM.  We will have dinner and a welcome reception in the Osprey conference room.  Beth and Kathy will discuss our class schedule and events during our retreat.

On Day One, we will be immersed in color and inspiration. Kathy Hattori will lead the group to develop a trend forward fashion palette that we will create in natural dyes. Our class will dye unusual and sumptuous fabrics with generous-sized swatches to create the foundation of our color library.  This class will be held in the downstairs Art Room. After dinner, we’ll be able to work on our color journals in the Osprey conference room, sip wine or tea and get to know each other.

Day Two starts with a focused indigo session. We will create a number of different vats and dip to complete our fashion palette. Each participant will have ample time to expand and refine their knowledge of indigo. Our goal is for students to leave this session with renewed confidence about this mysterious and magical dye.  The indigo session will be held downstairs in the Art Room, and if the weather is good, we can also work outside. We will have Open Lab time in the Osprey conference room from 7:30-9:00 pm.

On Day Three, Beth McTear will lead us in creating and printing with natural dyes on fabrics. We will use only non-toxic print pastes and colors and create one-of-a-kind designs. The indigo vat will be available for experiments with simple paste resists or experimental color work.  We will be downstairs in the Art Room for Beth’s session. We will have Open Lab time in the Osprey conference room from 7:30-9:00 pm.

Day Four:  We will spend the morning finishing any last minute projects and sharing our discoveries and a Q&A.  A celebration luncheon and our time together ends at 3 PM on Friday when we say our goodbyes and return to our homes, inspired and invigorated!
